AbstractIrrigation water management is becoming more important, as irrigation competes for limited water supplies, energy, and land as throughout the world degrade and decline in productivity, because of poor water management. Surface water resources of Pakistan are also limited. However an underground water storage of immense potential is available for exploitation. A significant increase in agricultura l production is anticipated by irrigation management utilizing both the surface and ground water resources. The command area of the Rakh Branch Canal in the Lower Rechna Doab has been selected as t he case study for which crop water requirements for ten-day periods have been computed considering the existing cropping pattern. The computation of t he reference crop evapotranspiration has been done by Penman Method using the measured climatic data. Irrigation water requirements are computed deducting effective rainfall as we ll as ground water contribution from the shallow water table and then by adding the operational wastes and deep percolation losses including routine leaching. The overall irrigation efficiency is considered as 40 percent. The ten-day irrigation water supplies are worked out from historic canal deliveries at its headworks and from ground water reservoir with reference to pumpage of public and private tubewel ls. I n light of computed requirements and water availability, a cropping pattern with 150 percent cropping intensity has been proposed for the command area. Irrigation scheduling based on conjunctive use of surface and ground water aiming at the delivery of the adequate amounts of water at the time of crop needs for proposed cropping pattern has been suggested.
