AbstractAnalysis of leachate from On-Noach's solid waste disposal revealed high concentrations of color and COD, i.e., colour in the of 4,500 - 6,000 Hazen and COD of about 1,600 to 2,100 mg/L. A mainly to remove color from the leachate was thus undertaken powdered activated carbon, alum and ozone. site range study using The results of the treatment study have shown that with a dose of 20 g/L powdered activated carbon at pH 8, 94% of color, 75% of COD, 25% of TKN, 77% of TP, 80% of Cd, 90% of Cr and 70% of Hg were removed within 30 min of contact time. With coagulation process using an alum dose of 1,000 mg/L at pH 5.5 (without adding any alkalinity) removals of 92% of color, 72% of COD, 13% of TKN, 61% of T.P., 80% of Cd, 87% of Cr and 43% of Hg were observed. Utilization of ozone at a concentration of 331. 2 mg 0 3 /L was effective in removing 17% of color and 6% of COD from a leachate within one hour of contact time. Increasing 0 3 concentration to 1,324.8 mg 0 3 /L resulted in higher removal efficiency, i.e., 54% of color and 12% of COD. On comparison of the above results, it can be said that powdered activated carbon is one of the best chemicals for removing color and COD from On-Noach's leachate.
