AbstractExperimental study on crossflow ultrafiltration is reported in this thesis. Experiments were conducted with various kinds of membrane pore sizes and with different operating parameters like cross flow velocity, transmembrane pressure and MLSS concentration. Empirical equations to estimate the steady state flux in the gel layer region and the gel layer resistance were respectively formulated in terms of transmembrane pressure, crossflow velocity and MLSS concentration. The transmembrane pressure had little influence on steady state flux but played a significant role in increasing the gel layer resistance. The remarkable effect of crossflow velocity on the flux and the gel layer resistance was found. The high crossflow velocity benefited the permeate and lowered the gel layer resistance. The extent of effect of MLSS concentration was medium, in comparison with those of the above mentioned operating parameters. The higher MLSS concentration, the lower steady state flux, the higher gel layer resistance. The higher temperature resulted in lower viscosity and higher steady state flux. The temperature effect on steady state flux was independent of membrane pore size. The effects of transmembrane pressure and crossflow velocity on the mass transfer coefficient as well as gel concentration were also investigated. The transmembrane pressure did not influence the mass transfer coefficient but enhanced gel concentration. The higher crossflow velocity enlarged the mass transfer coefficient but had no influence on the gel concentration.
