AbstractA laboratory study was conducted to investigate the treatability of combined RBC system with simulated anaerobic-filter (modified RBC) for medium- and high -strength organic wastewater. The RBC unit (4-stages, 30 cm disk diameter) and the simulated anaerobic-filter (SAF) (50 cm height, 10 cm diameter) were made of acrylic and glucose synthetic wastewater was used for this study. From the SAF at varing organic loading rates ( 10.84, 11.31, and kg SCOD/ m 3 I day), the maximum organic removal efficiency was at 4 hr detention time. 22 . 62 81.7% No significant improvement in organic loading removal was achieved by supplemental aeration at an organic loading range of 6. 67 7. 95 g SCOD/m2 /day in the RBC unit. However, 85% of ammonia loading removal was achieved with the use of supplemental air at the ammonia loading of 1.90 g NH3 - N/m2 / day . In the biofilm of disks, 57 and 4496 simultaneous denitrification with nitrification occurred with and without supplemental aeration at the respective first stage-organic loadings of 31. 80 and 26 . 68 g SCOD/ m2 / day . The overall SCOD removal efficiency of 95% (TDOC, 98%) was observed for all organic loadings (2.301 , 2 .323, and 4. 799 kg SCOD/ m3 /day) in the modified RBC system . The modified RBC system did not require any adjustments of environmental controlling parameters such as pH and alkalinity. The modified RBC system is found to be an effective and economical system for the treatment of strong organic wastewater.
