AbstractThe main mechanisms involved in cadmium transport in saturated subsurface was studied by modelling it as a fixed bed adsorption system. The batch and column adsorption experiments were conducted. Adsorption of cadmium is a fast process. More than 80% of the cadmium adsorption took place within 15 to 30 minutes and equilibrium conditions reached within few hours. Cadmium concentrations used ranges from 50 to 500 µg/L. All experiments were conducted at pH of 6. 0 . Experiments conducted with different particle sizes of soil indicated that isotherm parameters depend on soil particle size. Freundlich isotherm gave better correlation for adsorption of cadmium in soil medium than Langmuir isotherm. The applicability of relative solute velocity transport models derived from general solute transport equation, based on linear and Freundlich isotherm(with local equilibrium assumption) was investigated . The relative so lute velocities predicted from batch experimental data were found to be higher than that of soil column breakthrough data, thus isotherm parameters estimated from the column breakthrough were used in models simulation. The relative cadmium velocities(to Darcy's velocity) were found to be in the range of 0.0008-0.001, indicating limited mobility under the conditions tested.
