AbstractA laboratory study was conducted to investigate the immobilization of hazardous waste constituents namely heavy metals and toxic organics using cementitious binders . The binders were Ordinary Portland cement (OPC), Portland rice husk ash cement (PRHAC), and cement kiln dust (CKD). Hazardous wastes were used from an electroplating industry, a battery manufacture industry, both of which contained cadmium and lead, and aldrin contained wasteswater from a pesticide industry . Physical properties leachability were used to assess containing the wastes within their by the USEPA Extraction Procedure. like compressive strength and the effectiveness of the binders in matrix. Leachability was determined The leachability was found to increase as a function of the amount of waste, surface area / volume ratio of the samples and inversely as the pH of the extracting solution. An increase in the strength was observed at lower waste amounts and at a greater curing time of the specimens. A water / cement ratio of 0 . 50 was found to be optimum for inorganic wastes, while for organic wastes it was 0.35. PRHAC was found to be the best immobilizer for electroplating industry wastes and lead in the battery wastes . In the latter, OPC contained cadmium most effectively. CKD samples showed minimum leachability and sufficient strength for samples with pesticide wastes. The applicability of an adsorption / desorption model for the leaching of waste was also studied .
