AbstractA laboratory experiment was conducted on sediment collected from Chao Phraya River. A continuous- flow laboratory scale reactor was designed to simulate the river turbulent mixing condition in order to investigate the mixing effect on nitrogen transformation in sediment-water system. Batch experiments were carried out to study the effects of turbulent mixing on oxygen transfer. This also included the relative potential of nitrogen transformation in different depth of the sediment, and kinetics of nitrification/ denitrification in overlying water. Turbulent mixing showed obvious effect on nitrogen transformation in sediment-water system, even in the low mixing condition (90 rpm). This enhanced nitrification, but inhibited denitrification. The functional zone of sediment is only about 4 cm deep. The presented nitrogen removal capacity of sediment is about 5% of its potential which can be explored by mixing. Most of reactions occurred in overlying water and sediment-water interface under mixing condition. A regression equation was developed which indicated that K2
