AbstractA laboratory study was conducted to investigate the removal of organic pollutants in a municipal leachate by soil column process. The operational parameters studied were soil type and hydraulic loading. Batch experiments were carried to study the mechanisms that play a role to the removal of organics from leachate in soil column process. The results showed that the soils from Sara Buri and On-Nooch containing upto 50% of sand had a good efficiency of TOC and color removal. The efficiency was time dependent and was better at low hydraulic loading. The TOC and color removal efficiencies were greater than 80% and 93% respectively throughout the 18 weeks study. In comparison, the soil from Pattaya containing 85. 5% sand had a very low removal efficiency. Upto to 98% removal of ammonia-N and total phosphorus were achieved in the soils from Sara Buri and On-Nooch. The TOC adsorption capacity in soils from Sara Buri and On - Nooch were 4. 7 mg TOC/g soil and 4. 2 mg TOC/g soil respectively. Pattaya soil had a very low ads portion capacity. Adsorption was primarily responsible for the removal of TOC from the leachate in the soil column process. Biodegradation of organic matter occurred in the columns but it did not account for significant TOC removal. Reduction of percolation rate was much faster in Pattaya soil . It might be caused by clay dispersion and subsequent lodgement in the bottom of the column, and thus leading to a reduction in pore size.
