AbstractMethod based on Dynamic programming have been identified as an appropriate method to derive least-cost designs for storm drainage and sewerage systems. Cost objective f unction is commonly used in optimization models and it is found that development of the cost objective function tends to be tedious and getting reliable cost is sometimes difficult. This study is done to find a simplified model for practical applications. A model is developed employing dynamic programming and based on non-monetary objective function with three dimensional state variables such as pipe downstream crown level, pipe diameter and time of flow. Application of this model to some real networks and comparison with other mode ls shows no significant cost difference shown from cost minimization model. The developed model gives only 0. 01% more cost than the cost minimization model for 50% probability and 1.5% more for 95% probability. But the conventional design gives 1 .2% more than t he cost minimization model for 50% probability and 7.5% more for 95% probability, indicating the superiority of the developed model over t he conventional design method.
