AbstractCross flow ultrafiltration is a pressure membrane process in which the fluid to be filtered parallel to the membrane surface . The formation of cake can be reduced by scouring force of the flow, better permeate rate is obtained. driven flows filter thus Laboratory- scale ultrafiltration experiments with PVA solution and paper wastewater from Scott paper industry were carried out to study the membrane filter performances with respect to operating parameters. These operating parameters included, membrane cut off size, molecular weight of PVA, influent concentration, cross flow velocity and applied pressure . For paper wastewater, total solids and suspended solids contents were chosen to substitute the concentration effect. It was discovered that clogging in the membrane occurs quite slowly during first 30 minutes, and quasi - steady state was noticed normally after 50 minutes of filtration time . Extended hour ultrafiltration runs we re also done to predict and approach the behaviors of UF after long term operation. Optimum cross flow velocity< for which the permeate flux is the maximum) was noticed for paper wastewater but not in the case of PVA solutions. The filtration rate increased with an increase in applied pressure up to a certain e x tent, then the flux remained constant even the change in applied pressure was very significant. The quality of permeate continued improving with filtration time for both PVA and Wastewater. In case of PVA solution, Since only low concentration range was used, rejection results were complicated compared with that obtained from paper wastewater. In this study, quasi - steady state flux data were used to fit some empirical formula. The results obtained were quite satisfactory, but all basic parameters were treated as independent variables.
