Abstract | The present extensive study on the production of fish fields Ras carried out to evaluate the rice and fish performances when grown simultaneously and their effects fertility status of the soil. Furthermore, this study Ras an to determine the water requirement of a rice-fish field and to the economic viability of the system. in rice growth on the attempt assess Two fish species Here grown simultaneously with rice, namely: Oreochromisniloticus (ordinary and sex-reversed maleniletilapia) and Cyprinuscarpio (common carp) in paddy fields where nater depth Ra s maintained to a depth of 10 cm throughout the duration of the study at the stocking density of 50,000 1-cm fry/hectare. Minimal fertiliz er and chemicals Here applied and rice bran Ras used as a supplementary feed for fish. Findings show that growing fish a long with rice increased the nitrogen concentration and grain yield of rice which can be attributed to limited damage of pests and diseases in the area due to the ability of the fish to eat harmful organisms, such as insects and insect larvae as «ell as their ability to enhance soil fertility through their feeding habits . Nitrogen content of fields where ordinary tilapia were groen increased and the phosphorus content of fields «here ordinary and sex-reversed tilapia were grown like Rise increased significantly. Increase in the nitrogen and phosphorus content of t he soil can be ascribed to the ability of the fish to enhance nutrient availability through their feeding habits and to some extent to fish excretion in the paddy field. Fish growth performance showed promising results. Final fish mean weight ranged from 5. 0 g to 6. 6 g compared to the initial mean weight which ranged from 0. 05 g to 0. 13 g Percent survival ranged from 20 - 25% inspire of the prevalence of bird predators in the experimental area. Total Rater used of the rice-fish field Ras not significantly different from the control rice field under the continuous s submergence. Growing rice simultaneously with fish can be a profitable venture as shown by the economic analysis and sensitivity analysis indicated that productivity can be further improved by increasing the fish survival and reducing other variable costs. Statistically no significant differences (otherwise stated) were observed for most of the parameters of rice production, possibly because in the nursery system used s mall fish were not capable of creating a significant impact on them. |
