AbstractA field experiment was conducted with maize at the westend campus of Asian Institute of Technology , Bangkok during January-April 1988. The purposes of the study were 1 ) to study effect and interaction of irrigation and Phosphorus (P ) on growth and yield of maize, 2 ) to determine nutrient concentration as effected by irrigation and P application a nd 3) to test and improve the preliminary diagnosis and yield prognosis models of P which were developed by Guerra (1986 ), and also , to develop therapy mode l of P based on present data and those from an P-experiment in 1978 . Three irrigation regimes in which water was applied whenever depletion of available soil moisture (DASM ) reached 25 %, 50 % and 75 % were combined with three level of P fertilizer 0 , 50 and 100 kg-P/ha . The nine factors combination were replicated three times in a split plot design with systematic plot arrangement. Plant height , DM concentration of N, P and K increased with increased P-level and reduced DASM- l eve l . The average maximum grain yield , 3.2 t/ha was obtained at W25 PlOO treatment . The P-effect was highly significant (p = 1 %) on grain yield and various yield components while the irrigation effect was only significant (p = 5 %) on 1000 seeds weight. There was no significant interaction effect of the two factors on yield and yield components. Water Use Efficiency (WUE ) value increased with increased DASM level and increased P- application. The chemical composition of the young plant was determined at a fixed DMw-level of 5 g . /plant and compared with the preliminary models of P. The obtained curves were incorporated into the existing models of diagnosis and yield prognosis covering old and n ew areas. A preliminary therapy model of P was developed based on the present data and those obtained in the P-experiment in 1978 .
