AbstractThe objective of this research was to study the flow of energy through the production of selected crops in Nepal . Information on the energy inputs and outputs for the se lected major crops in two agroecologically different districts of Nepal were collected and analysed. Energy ratio and energy productivity were computed for various categories of farmers. Relationships between maize output and energy inputs were developed. The methodology used in accounting the energy values of various inputs were embodied energy values or gross energy requirements of the respective input. However, for human labor and bullock power, energy content of consumed food were considered. Energy values of main output and by- products were their calorific food value and gross heating value respectively. The energy ratio for paddy varied from 6 to 8 in a terai district, while it varied from 16 to 22 in a hill district among the various categories of farmers. The energy ratio for wheat was found not very different comparatively between the terai and the hill districts. An average ratio for wheat for these two regions was about 6. An average energy ratio for sugarcane and maize were found to be 16 and 7. 5 respectively. The maize output was linearly correlated with the pre - harvest energy inputs.
