Abstract | This study has concentrated on the effects of farm mechanization in the selected Asian countries. The socio- economic effects and consequence of farm mechanization varied according to the stage of agricultural and rural development of the selected countries. The rapid introduction of farm mechanization in the industrialized countries of Japan, Korea and Taiwan was the direct result of efforts to reduce farm drudgery and to substitute for the dwindling agricultural labor force. Agricultural mechanization contributed to increased crop production and farm income, and to decrease labor input. Increase in yield in Japan, Korea and Taiwan is due to the timeliness operation by farm machineries. Mechanization in Pakistan, Philippines and Thailand has played a key role in enabling the expansion of cultivated areas to increase production. The effects of these countries in farm income, labor saving and cost reduction are quite smaller than those of well mechanized countries In the early stage of mechanization of well mechanized countries, the government played an important role to develop farm mechanization through financial aid for farmers and manufacturers, research and development, training and education and marketing for supply. But less mechanized countries greatly depend on the private sector. |
