AbstractTwo experiments on mass culture of Moina macrocopa based on culture of Chlorella were conducted in 4 outdoor concrete tanks. Both commercial fertilizer (urea, triphosphate) and septage were used as major nutrients source; garden soil extract and mono-sodium glutamate waste (Ami-Ami) were used as micronutrients source. Septage was an effective and complete fertilizer for Chlorella growth. The optimum loading of septage in algal growth medium was at 30 ppm TKN; additional urea input to increase the nitrogen concentration resulted in a higher production of Chlo1·ella (4. 1 x 106 cells/mL). Chlorella growth rates between two fertilizers were not significantly different. Ami- Ami as a micronutrients supply was more effective than garden soil extract. The production of M. Macrocopa was positively related to the abundance of available food. The highest yield, 1078 g wet weight biomass/week was obtained in a 5 m2 tank in the first experiment. M. macrocopa could grow on bacteria and organic detritus with a relatively low yield at 193 g wet weight/week/tank. In second experiment, M. macrocopa was continuously cultured for 9 days, the peak population density reached 7500 individuals/L. M. macrocopa growth was similar with two types of effluent of algal culture . Total ammonia and free un- ionized ammonia (NH3 -N) ranged from 9.2 to 10.9 mg/L and 0.7 to 7.7 mg/L, respectively. But it was not fatal to M. macrocopa. Life cycle of M. macrocopa was observed in batch culture in the laboratory. Fed with abundant Chlorella the M. macrocopa population density reached 43 individuals/mL. Larvae matured in two days and produced progeny on the third day after birth. Each adult female produced a brood of 3 to 26 youngs daily throughout an maximum of 9-day life span. Filtering rate was positively correlated with algal concentration and body size of M. macrocopa.
