AbstractA general survey of Northeast Thailand was initially conducted to collect base-line data on existing rice-fish systems, the extension methodologies of agencies involved in its promotion , and constraints to further expansion. Detailed case studies of rice- fish systems were made in six provinces of the region. A major factor in the increase in rice-fish systems is the decreased availability of wild fish. The practices observed were variable because farmers adapted various techniques to be compatible with their limited resources. The production was usually enough for family and surplus yields were sold to generate additional income. The greatest constraint to further extension was a lack of fish fry in the village . The extension methodologies employed by agencies showed large variations in concepts, approach, duration and resources. Rice-fish culture has expanded within the village and neighboring communities and both with and without external support . It appears to be both sustainable and viable and seems to have the potential to provide a significant contribution to the improvement of the nutritional status of people in rural areas. Efforts to increase production in rice-fish systems should involve upgrading and modifying existing systems rather than introducing new and untested technologies.
