AbstractAn experiment was conducted over a period of 210 days to study the effectiveness of snakehead (Channa striata) as a controlling preda tor on recruitment of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) in a semi-intensive polyculture pond system with Puntius gonionotus. The r e were two treatments in duplicate where 200 fingerlings each of tilapia and Puntius were stocked in 200 m2 ponds, Snakeheads were stocked 5 % and 10 % in treatment 1 and 2 respectively as a percentage of tilapia fingerlings stocked. Buffalo manure, paragrass (Brachiaria mutica ) , water spinach (Ipomoea aguatica ) and urea were the pond inputs applied at the same rate throughout this experiment; Rice bran was supplied during the first two months only. Fish production and growth, nutritive values of pond inputs, water quality parameters of pond water and simple economic analysis for fish subsystem were determine d . The total net extrapolated yield of 2800 kg/ha/year and 2426 kg/ha/year were obtained from treatment 1 and 2 respectively. The total yield and individual size of Puntius was exactly same in both treatments but the total yield and individual size of tilapia were slightly higher in treatment 1 than in treatment 2, while snakeheads were grown better in the treatment 1. All the harvested fish attained marketable size (over 10 cm ) and, the effect of predatory fish on tilapia recruits was highly successful in both treatments. Concerning the lower growth of snakeheads in treatment 2 it could be concluded that 5 % predator level (treatment 1) is quite enough to control the recruitment of tilapia for a growing period of 7 months.
