AbstractThree types of forages planted at the same time, 20 and 40 days after the emergence CDAE> of young corn grown under rainfed condition was tested in a crop - livestock fish integrated farm out of the need for an improved forage production during the dry season. Annual legumes: bushy type cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) and twining type lablab C Lablab purpureus) extended dry matter production up to the earliest part of the dry season. Each yielded 0. 10 t/ha and 0. 29 t/ha of dry matter, respectively when planted at the same time as young corn. Combination of perennial grass and legume : guinea grass Panicum maximum) and Verano stylo (Stylosanthes hamata) extended dry matter production throughout the dry season when planted at same time as young corn. More than 4 . 0 t/ha of dry matter from guinea grass was obtained from December to June. Guinea grass harvested in February and April , time when the major source of feed in the farm under study is rice straw, can provide 34% and 27% of the feed requirements of the livestock in the said farm. These forages were planted without any interference on the existing cropping practices for young corn and without additional input i.e. fertilizer. More importantly planting forage together with young corn had no deleterious effect on the marketable yield and dry matter yield of young corn.
