AbstractThe class of space planning problems is reviewed. The problem typically involves constraints on the space available and the planning of the space to meet specifications. The traditional approach is to optimize criteria function using mathematical techniques. In practice, however, by this approach one could not consider all the specifications without getting into the problems of ccmbinatorial explosion. The expert on the space planning is usually guided by heuristics which are acquired through experience. This effort is towards building knowledge based system to capture such heuristics. A LISP based system is developed for a simplified situation involving a supermarket.
