Abstract | The corrrnunication system requirements for AIT Local Area Network is defined. Four alternative conceptual networking models, namely , the host-independent, host-dependent, two-level switching, and centralized are presented and each of these models is verified for suitability. The model that fits the requirements is the hybrid model, which is a combination of hostindependent and host-dependent models. This has the product components needed for the implementation. Selected IAN vendors are evaluated for components and services. The chosen central IAN is a broadband with components obtained from Sytek and Bridge Corrrnunications. MicroIANs can be the IBM PC broadband, IBM Token Ring, Ethernet, or their combination. Cost estimates for the network component solutions are provided as references for the implementation. |
