AbstractThis study develops a GPSG parser shell capable of parsing sentences in a natural language described in the formalism of GPSG. A simple Thai GPSG is formulated and the parser is applied to it. The GPSG parser shell is designed to be able to use with complete GPSG which is much more compact than phrase-structure grammar, especially a GPSG of a language having very free-ordered words. Based on the modularity concept, the GPSG parser shell is divided into 3 parts: user interface, translator and the parser. The user interface receives the GPSG components from the user interactively. The translator takes the input components from the user interface and translates them into internal representations. Finally, the parser uses these internal representations to parse sentences with the interaction with GPSG components. In this manner, there is no intermediate grammar to be used in the parsing process and the space is saved . The formulated Thai GPSG consists of ID, LP and metarules. Moreover, it makes use of features which are one of the distinguished characteristic of GPSG. As a consequence, the Thai grammar can be described in a simple and compact form.
