AbstractThis research attempts to explore the current work situation of foreign volunteers in the field of rural development at the grass roots level. Its aim is to identify problems and to suggest what needs to be taken into consideration by the Thai Government and the volunteer agencies. A field survey of three volunteer agencies conducted during May and June 1987 revealed a gap between the needs of volunteers and the support from the volunteer agencies and the Thai Government. This calls for improvements in the preparation process for new volunteers , more efficient site placement and better utilization of the skills of the volunteers. Better coordination between the volunteer agencies, the Thai agencies that receive foreign volunteers and DTEC/Thai Government is necessary. In line with the intent of transferring skills to the Thai co- workers, Thai language and cultural training is required. An understanding of the Thai bureaucracy and work style are also needed. Experienced former volunteers could be useful contributors in this during training courses. In addition, the study showed that the following factors, namely sex, previous work experience and the length of service in Thailand, do not affect foreign volunteers' work in Thailand.
