AbstractThe purpose of this study was to study the performance of a policy based on the unit characteristic for a unit load warehouse system operating on a single command mode . A generalized simulation model was developed based on fixed time interval discrete event simulation. The computer program was coded in FORTRAN IV and run on ND570/ND530 system. The model was used to simulate a policy based on individual unit's duration of stay, a unit characteristic, for eight different types of problems and compared with other standard policies. The policy was also evaluated analytically for a particular type of material flow, the perfectly balanced flow. A heuristic was developed to schedule the material flow so as to bring it c lose to perfectly balanced flow . The DOS policy performs better than other standard policies when the cycle times are large and more or less equal. The improvement depends on how large the cycle times are and how close the material flow is to the perfectly balanced state. Scheduling further improved the performance of the DOS policy up to 10% for situations with products having large cycle times .
