AbstractThis study attempts to estimate the availability of a production line from the practical point of view. Availability, as a combined effect of reliability (MTTF) and maintainability (MTTR), is the main focus of many researchers in recent years. In this study an approximate formula of the 3-machine, 2-buffer production system is derived from the Malathronasetal. work of the 2 - machine, 1 - buffer production line. Next, a regression equation for determining the total optimal buffer is constructed. The regression results suggest that this is feasible. It leads to a simple form useful for practical applications. Throughout the study, the obtained numerical results are tested by simulation and their adequateness is shown. The optimal distribution of total buffer between the interstate location is determined by a heuristic procedure which can be easily applied to a production line without computer's aids. Some practical aspects of management are also discussed, and from the estimated system availability, the throughput of the production system can be calculated and will help the decision- making .
