AbstractThe differential settlement of oil tanks can cause the failure or aalfunction of tanks. differential settleaent Various settleaent patterns and the criteria for are briefiy reviewed. The criteria for each settlement pattern have been exa•ined. Non planar settlement is found to be the most serious cause of da•age of tank shells. While predictive capability for differential set tleaent of tank shell and botto• plate is available, field evidence is lacking on the establishaent of peraisible values for different paraaeters. For non planar shell damage which can be expressed as a measure of tan8, the local slope, satisfactory peraissible values have been established fro• past records. Good correlation is found between p •ax and tan8 for tanks on both sandy and clayey grounds. A aethod of prediction of tan 8 is suggested in this study expressed in terms of p max, a parameter which lends itself to easy prediction.
