AbstractA field experiment was conducted consumption mechanism on a small paddy field The study was conducted at REC, AIT using RD23 and RD7. to study the water during the dry season. two paddy varieties viz, The results obtained showed different water requirement for RD23 and RD7. The plots having nor mal water supply for complete growth period starting 10 DAT with a ponding depth of average Scm showed a water requirement of 758.8 and 986 .3 mm for RD23 and RD7 respectively . On the other hand plots having mid-season drainage just before heading for a period of 6 days showed a water requirement of 880.3 and 1712.5 mm for RD23 and RD7 respectively. The ETa values observed for whole growth period after 10 DAT were 510.0 and 657.4 mm respectively for RD23 and RD7 . Water losses were mainly from border percolation through paddy bunds averaging 3.0 mm/day for normal plots but in case of plots having mid-season drainage it went up to 9 .5 mm/day. It was observed that coating of bunds by mud or clay greatly helps in reducing the border percolation and water requirement and maintains constant depth of water for longer time . The plots having mid-season drainage showed a higher water requirement resulting from greater BP after mid-season drainage. On the other hand increase in yield was found to be only @ 5% . The crop coefficients (Kc=ETa/ETo) estimated by Pan method were 1 .33 , 1.79, 1.56 and 1 .38 , 2.19, 2.33 for RD23 and RD7 at vegetative, reproductive and ripening stages respectively. In case of modified Penman the Kc values were 0.97, 1.41, 1.37 and 1 . 02, 1.73, 2.06 for RD23 and RD7 for the same stages. The Kcl (ETa/Ep) values were found to be 0.87, 1.18, 1.09 for RD23 and 0.91, 1 .46, 1.63 for RD7 at vegetative, reproductive and ripening stages respectively. The average pan coefficient estimated by using modified Penman ETc was found to be 0.85.
