AbstractThe aim of this research was to develop the relationships between energy- inputs and crop yields which can be helpful in formulating the mechanization policies and in evaluating the relative advantage of various energy-inputs. The effects of farm energy availability on annual production and cropping intensity were also studied. Data regarding the energy- inputs and crop yields connected to 500 crop plots representing the holdings of 24 farmers of 6 villages of Meerut district of Northern India region, collected during a previously conducted survey were analyzed. Major crops of the region viz. wheat, maize and sugarcane were covered in the study. In most of the cases, crop yields were linearly correlated to the total energy inputs. Fertilizer energy was found to be comparatively more effective than tillage energy and irrigation energy in the case of high yielding variety wheat, while irrigation energy was most influencing on sugarcane. In general the tillage energy input was not found to affect the crop yields significantly. Farm energy availability indicated the capability of the farmer to adequately irrigate his land and to practice multiple cropping. The annual production per unit area increased manifolds from the farmer with least power available to the most mechanized farmer.
