AbstractAn electrically heated rotary dryer with straight axial flights was designed, fabricated and tested for its performance. The performance of the dryer was studied with respect to the heating surface temperature, degree of inclination, exposure time, and paddy feed rate. The dryer showed good performance in accelerating the drying of wet paddy, and improving milling quality depending on the heating combinations. Results indicated that paddy with an initial moisture content of 26% Cw. b.) could be dried down to 18-19% with head rice yield comparable with the unheated paddy sample. The rotary dryer exhibited high drying efficiency averaging 44% or in terms of water removal, - 5. 56 MJ/kg water removed. Finally, cost analysis indicated that high moisture paddy could be dried with lesser cost using the rotary dryer in comparison with the conventional heated and unheated flat - bed dryers.
