Abstract | An experimental rotary batch-type conduction dryer with short inclined-straight flight utilizing an electric heater as a heated source was used to study the conduction drying of paddy . Heating surface temperature ranging from 75 to 175°C and exposure times up to 140 min were used. Moisture removal from paddy during continuous drying could be adequately described by a modified logarithmic model. The moisture reduction rate was strongly dependent on heating surface temperature but less influenced by grain initial moisture content. Tempering treatment allowing slow equilibration of temperature and moisture immediately after drying resulted in a higher head rice yield and moisture removal than the treatment during which the heated paddy was rapidly cooled for a short time prior to tempering. By using conduction heating in two stages with optimum exposure time and sufficient tempering time, paddy having high initial moisture content of 26% w.b. could be accelerating dried to 15% moisture level with an improvement in its head yield. However, it resulted in about 5% reduction of head yield for paddy having 22% initial moisture content . |
