AbstractThe direct and the indirect nutritional effects of feeding fresh duckweed (Lemna perpusilla) to Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were studied in outdoor recirculating and static water concrete tanks at feeding levels of 2, 4 and 6% fish body weight /day (feed dry weight basis, fish wet weight basis) with a control treatment u sing commercial pelleted feed for herbivorous fish at a 5% level. Fish growth was significantly higher at t h e 6% feeding level of Lemna compared to the control. Total percentage weight gains of 277, 629 and 710% were obtained for individual fish at 2, 4 and 6% feeding levels of fresh duckweed in the recirculating water system, respectively, in which only direct nutritional effects of duckweed consumption were possible. Fish in the static water system exposed to natural food due to the indirect contribution of the decomposition of uneaten Lemna an d fish faeces had better growth than fish fed with Lemna only. Growth of fish was limited however in the static water system, by poor water quality, particularly dissolved oxygen deficiency due to decomposition of uneaten duckweed. The apparent protein digestibility obtained in the study ranged from 87. 2% to 90. 9% showing that Nile tilapia effectively digested Lemna.
