AbstractAn experiment was conducted for a period of 84 days to determine the optimum feeding l evel and nutritional value of paragrass (Brachiaria mutica) as feed for the tropical herbivorous carp, silver barb (Puntius gonionotus). There were five treatments in triplicate which received fresh paragrass as feed (0.5%, 1.0%, 2.5% and 7.5% of the total body weight of the fish/day, feed on a dry weight basis and fish on a wet weight basis) and one control with commercial pelleted fish feed. The 5.0% level feeding rate was the optimum on the basis of percentage weight gain (%), specific growth rate (%/day) and daily weight gain (g/day) and feed utilization efficiencies. The slow growth response of the fish was due to the poor apparent digestibility of paragrass by the test fish. Puntius did not grow as well in tanks in comparison to hapas in the pond in terms of growth rate and feed utilization efficiencies. The overall growth was also poor when compared to other species.
