Abstract | The relationship between feed supply and productivity of the new fish ponds in an integrated crop/livestock/fish farm was investigated in two new earth ponds each 200 m2 , under rainfed conditions. Buffalo manure was used to fertilize the ponds, supplemented by paragrass, rice bran and waste Chinese kale. The average extrapolated fish yield was 4. 2 tons/ha/yr of Polyculture of Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ) tawes ( Puntius gonionotus ) and bighead carp ( Aristichthys nobilis ) at stocking density as 400:400:20 fish/200 m2 pond respectively over 8 months period, August 1986 to March 1987. However, only tawes and bighead carp reached a size available for the markets near Bangkok. Tilapia did not reach marketable size due to excess breeding in the pond. Economic analysis of AIT farm results and those from farms in the Northeast region of Thailand were compared. Net income from the new ponds on the AIT farm in the first year of operation was negative (-3,220.26 Baht) . Applying the economic data from the farm and market situation in Northeast Thailand to the biological results from the AIT farm, produced a better result because of higher market prices, lower labour and other input costs. However, the net income was still negative (-766.33 Baht) |
