AbstractSome issues, such as water inflow and surface settlement, can occur during the breakthroughs in soft ground conditions. There are several techniques carried out during TBM launching and arrival to avoid the problems. In Bangkok, Thailand, the subsoil is an alternating layer of clay and sand. The difficulties are the settlement of the upper soft clay layer and the groundwater from the aquifers. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the jet grouting design and construction method for TBM breakthrough. This study focuses on the water leakage issues, and the information is collected the MRTA Orange Line East Project. The MRTA Orange East Project is the underground MRT project in Bangkok. In this project, rapid jet grouting was applied to provide the TBM breakthrough safety. This technique can create large diameter jet grouting columns, 2.5 m, to form the jet grouting blocks for TBM breakthroughs. Based on the MRTA Orange Line Project, the rapid jet grouting was constructed successfully, and there are no major accidents. This study is divided into two sections, the construction evaluation, and design evaluation. As the construction evaluation, besides jet grouting, many methods are applied to ensure the TBM breakthrough safety. Jet grouting is a common method. The concern of this method is the integrity of jet grouting blocks. Therefore, the jet grouting should be constructed strictly according to the method statement. Also, the corrosion should be considered for permanent purposes. Moreover, the integrity of jet grouting blocks, such as the strength, permeability, and diameter, is verified in the trial test. Thus, in the construction, the combination of many techniques should be applied to provide a safer TBM breakthrough. According to the design evaluation, the cohesion of the jet grouting mixture is a significant parameter that affects the jet grouting block dimensions. Hence, the cohesion should be developed based on local soils. Also, at a greater depth, the tunnel is possibly subjected to high water pressure. Besides the permeability coefficient of a jet grouting block, the dimension should not be overlooked, especially the length. The larger dimensions increase the flow path and reduce the water discharge at the opening.
