AbstractField data about tractor use was collected for various tractors in 1 9 districts of Pakistan. 53 tractor owners were interviewed for evaluation of their tractor use for different farm operations and extent of their commercial use on the road as haulage vehicles. On an average, annual use of a tractor was found to be 1300 hours. Out of this, on an average only 600 hours were used for agricultural operation s including transportation and threshing. On an average 700 hours were used for commercial custom hiring on roads, which is 54 % of the total annual use of the tractor. The tractors are mainly used for hauling construction materials, like bricks, cement, sand, earth, gravel , premix, paper, wood and steel. The cost per hour and the cost per crop area decreased with higher annual use . Farm income and costs of tractor operations were compared and it was found that 32 % of the farmers were running at a loss from the use of the tractors on the farm. The commercial income and tractor costs on commercial hiring were also equated. On a n average the farmers were generating about 38 % of profit over the cost of tractor operations. The over all net income in a year was found roughly 46 % of the total cost of tractor operations.
