| Abstract | The detection of piles is a challenging topic that has remained unsolved properly utilizing electric imaging or other geophysical approaches. The old or abandoned piles were previously positioned in a complex metropolitan area with several lateral heterogeneities that severely affected the accuracy of a routine electric imaging investigation. The study investigates the effectiveness of 3D electrical resistivity imaging (3D-ERI) in detecting concrete piles in Bangkok soft clay based on geoelectric 3D forward modeling and testing. Firstly, The effect of heterogeneity on 2D-ERI and 3D-ERI measurements was investigated by a series of 3D-ERI simulations on 3D forward modeling. Then Set up a soil box model and conducted 3D-ERI measurements for different pile diameters (ϕ), electrode spacing (a), pile spacing (S), and Buried depth of the pile (D) using a mixed dipole gradient array. The 3D-ERI surveys were also performed in the field conditions. Lastly, the results were compared to the 3D-ERI model-based inversion and soil box measurements. The result of the study indicates that the 3D-ERI might mitigate the influence of lateralization heterogeneities and anomalous objects. In the case of Bangkok soft clay, the investigation was able to detect the installed piles in a homogeneous surrounding soil. |
