Abstract | In this study, steady state models were developed to simulate reciprocating and centrifugal compressor chiller systems, coupled with cooling tower. Additionally models were developed to simulate a chiller system coupled with chilled water storage, operating under different storage modes. The reciprocating chiller model was developed using data from a catalog. The centrifugal chiller model was developed for a chiller in the AIT chiller system. Using actual data from the AIT system, the centrifugal compressor was modelled, and further readings were taken under different conditions to validate the model predictions. Through the actual readings taken, and the models predictions, some improvements in operating practice were suggested. The chilled water storage simulation was done, considering a load curve similar to that of AIT's load on a single chiller. Three different storage operating modes were considered, and these were evaluated using three different electricity rate structures. Replacement of the large chiller by a smaller one, coupled with storage, proved to be the most worthwhile investment, with a payback period of 4 to 5 years for all three electricity rate structures. These results showed it would be feasible for AIT to consider installing chilled water storage. |
