AbstractThis study is to test a solar powered zeolite-water adsorption refrigerator (made in U.S.A.) and monitor its performance in this tropical area. In the first series test, the maximum gross solar COP (total cooling effect divided by the incident solar energy) is about from 5 to 6 % , the lowest water temperature in the evaporator is about 4 C, and no ice could be produced in the evaporator. After first modification of the equipment, test data shows significant changes i n collector surface and bottom temperatures and the gross solar COP is lower than the initial test by about 2 % . Second modification is to withdraw t h e water adsorbed in zeolite and recharge the system with distilled water step by step accompanied with test after water charge. Test results show that the gross solar COP is about 3 % , even lower than the one of the first modified system . Data analysis shows that the maximum water concentration is about 21.5 % after the modification , 5 % lower than the one of original equipment. The reason of lower capability of adsorbing more water in the zeolite is still unknown. Theoretical analysis shows that the performance of the equipment was at its normall behaviour in the climate of this tropical area. A roughly economic analysis shows the payback periods of the refrigerator as if it could work properly in this tropical area.
