AbstractIn this research a drinking water quality i ndex (WQID) was deve loped which represented the integrated effect of the 7 water quality parameters considered in this study and emphasized on diarrhoeal disease assessment and control. The developed WQID was based on the WHO (1971-1984 ) dri nking wat er standards and the actual field data obtained from Bangladesh . The suitability and application of the deve loped index was validated with some se l ected field data of Thailand. It was found that t he developed index was reasonably sensitive to changes in the water quality parameter 's values , especially the faecal coliform data which is important and rel evant for drinking purpose as we ll as occurrences of diarrhoeal diseases. Finally it was found that, poss ibly t here will be no incidences of diarrhoea within the WQID range of 90-100 . Thus acceptabl e quality for drinking purpose was set in the 90-100 range of the WQID scale .
