AbstractIn this study, prediction of filter efficiency was studied using modified O'Melia-Ali's model. The model used in the present study for the entire cycle of filtration was developed theoretically assuming an analogy between the filtration and adsorption. The effect of variation of filtration rate, particle size of suspension and filter grain size were studied experimentally using a laboratory-scale filter set-up. Latex suspension and a glass bead medium of known sizes were used in this study. The model parameters calculated using the experimental results were found to follow a uniform trend with the operating parameters. An empirical relationship between model parameter and operating parameters were formulated. Once this kind of empirical relationship is formulated from a limited number of experiments, it can be used to simulate the filter performance at any other operating parameters of the given system. This will be useful in the rational design of filter and upgrading the performance of existing filters as well. The clean bed filter efficiency calculated from experimental results were found to be close to Happel's and Rajagopalan-Tien's model.
