Abstract | Horizontal Flow Coarse Media Pre-Filtration is an alternative pre-treatment method in a rural water supply system. A detailed study in its turbidity removal pattern as well as its potential as a filter alternative in the chlorination -filtration process for iron removal is necessary to see its applicability in small community water supply systems . This study was conducted to determine the effects of various physical parameters and chemical addition in the turbidity and iron removal efficiency of the hori7.ontal filter. The study revealed t ha t the turbidity removal efficiency is dependent on the filtration rate , media size a nd filter length. Addition of flocculant in the form of alum improves t he turbidity removal efficiency , however its effectiveness is limited in the initial hours of operation for filtration rates higher than 0 .76 m3 / m2 - h with media size of 0.40 cm. The average removal efficiency is directly proportional to t he filter media size but inversely proportional to filtration rate for both filter runs with or without flocculant. However , the initial Kaolin clay concentration has different effects o n both conditions. For filter runs with flocculant , it is inversely proportional to removal efficiency but for runs without flocculant, its effect is negligible. Horizontal filter is only marginally effective in the iron removal. Even with the addition of chemicals , removal efficiency is only 35% at a filtration rate of 0. 54 m3 / m2 - h using media size of 0 .40 cm a t 40 cm filter length. Initial studies were also made to investigate the performance of Matrix filter in the turbidity and iron removal. Results showed that it has a good potential for both turbidity a nd iron removal. |
