AbstractThis study was aimed to compare the operation of UASB (Upflow An aerobic Sludge BlanKet) reactor having incline d tube settlers (ITS) with that of conventiona1- OSAB reactor. UASB reactors without and with ITS were operated at different HRT of 4 h to 48 h. using brewery· wastewater a s feed substrate . Investigation on gas production rate , methane content, COD and solids removal efficiencies were made. Over a wide range of COD loading rates tried in this study, it was determined that organic loadings up to 10 kg COD/ m3-d could be handled with high efficiency . COD removal was more than 95 percent, and methane production was more than 150 l /Kg COD added when t he hydraulic retention time was 12 h. Shorter detention time, that is, higher organic loading rate hampered the performance o f the reactors , in terms of COD removal and a mount of gas produced per kg of COD added. It was found that inclined tub setter provided better gas production and solids removal efficiency and more methane content. Especially, higher solids removal was observed during low hydraulic retention period.
