Abstract | Sediment from Nonthaburi Bridge vicinity of Chao Phraya River was sampled and laid on two experimental units with 5 cm depth at the beginning and artificial wastewater was supplied with no displacement of sediment during whole period of the study. One unit was simulated as aerobic condition. The other one was as anaerobic condition. Both units were run simultaneously with same substrate and with same contact time except the last run (Run no 4) which was operated only in the aerobic unit. Effect of substrate concentration effect of sediment condition and effect of contact time were studied on reaction of substrate transformation by sediment. There was evident of the importance of sessile microbial populations in recycling nutrients and degrading organics in aquatic environments especially attached heterotrophic biofilms under polluted condition. The experimental results indicated that the reactions which took place in the aerobic unit shifted with the organic loading. Main reaction changed from nitrification to denitrification , and then to sulfate reduction when organic loading was increased. Among the above three reactions , nitrification did not occur in the anaerobic unit. The contact time had effect in which shorter contact time provided higher organic loading and less time for microbial decomposition of the substrates. No sulfate reduction appeared until almost all of the added nitrate- nitrogen was reduced under anaerobic condition. |
