Abstract | This study aimed to assess the feasibility of using mixed substrate to enhance biogas generation from Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket CUASB> process . Three 8 . 5 L-UASB reactors were fed with different mixture ratios of chicken manure and brewery wastewater. Initially the process started up at an organic loading rate of 0.62 kg COO/m3 .d. and at a hydraulic retention time of 48 hr at 35° c. Organic loading rate was increased up to 6.3 kg CO O/m3 .d 8 weeks after t he star t - up with improve d performance . COO removal efficiency reached up to 90 %. Daily gas production started slowly and picked up rapidly at the later stage . At final stage, approximately 9 L of total gas could be produced daily a nd the average gas production rate was 180 L/kg COO added. It was found that the best results were obtained with the digester fed with the mixture of 25 % poultry manure a nd 75 % brewery wastewater at the organic loading rate of 3.1 1 kg COO/m3 .d a nd 24- hr hydraulic retention time. The gas yield was 247 L/kg COO add ed. The methane content of the biogas from t he waste varied from 66 to 73 %. Efficiency of methane generation was 40 % of the maximum potential. |
