AbstractA series of triaxial compression tests were carried out on undisturbed samples of medium stiff Bangkok clay to study the behaviour (e.g. pore pressure development, stress-strain behaviour and strength characteristics) of natural deposit of soils under in-situ stresses. Samples were isotropically consolidated and Ko-anisotropically consolidated based on the insitu stresses and were subsequently sheared under undrained and drained conditions. Also samples were isotropically consolidated to high pressure and subsequently were released to a certain pressure to get the same water content before shearing. The results of the test under in-situ stresses show that the undrained shear strength, shear strain at failure and pore pressure development of isotropic consolidated samples are higher than those for Ko-anisotropic consolidated samples. Limiting stresses are reached at large strain and no work softening were observed under drained condition while softening more pronounced under Ko condition than under isotropic condition. The over consolidation affects the pore pressure development and the undrained shear strength. The pore pressure-stress ratio relationship is linear for both isotropic and anisotropic condition but with different gradient. Also linear variations were observed on the normally consolidated and heavily over consolidated samples. While clays under lightly over consolidated condition showed bilinear variation.
