AbstractPile foundation practice in Southern Taiwan is reviewed and discussed in relation to the relevant available literature. Two case histories in Southern Taiwan are studied and evaluated through an analysis of the geotechnical aspects of the driven piles. Detailed investigations of subsurface conditions are made for the design for the bearing capacities of piles which has been revealed that t he heavy loads can be supported by piles at sand layer. Therefore , to estimate the ultimate static pile capacity in cohesion less soils is used by Meyerhof Empirical Method, Japanese Building Standard, Meyerhof Analytical Method, DM-7 Method, and Norlund Analytical Method . The Hiley formula is used to predict the dynamic pile capacity. Beside, the results of pile load test are interpreted through analysis, comparisons and discussions by various methods. Usually, pile load test are carried out to serve as a proof test to check the ultimate pile capacity. Found to be that the Norlund Analytical Method matched with Vander ' s method can be performed to estimate the static pile capacity in Southern Taiwan area, the results of Hiley formula can also be taken as reference to predict pile capacity. Finally, discussions and conclusions are summarized s o that it can serve as a guideline for future geotechnical considerations for installation of piles.
