AbstractTime-settlement data of more than 30 different sections of the 55 km long Bang Na-Bang Pakong highway were analyzed. The deformation parameters, namely undrained modulus, E , drained modulus, E', and coefficient of consolidation, C , were back-figured from the field performance v of the highway embankment and the following correlations were found: E = 150 S U UV E' = 15 S UV C (field)/C (lab) = 26 v v where S is the uncorrected vane shear strength. It was found that C UV V values were overestimated by the Asaoka's method when the during-construction time-settlement curve was used and best estimated when back-figured from field performance. It was found that for construction settlement, the method of COX (1981), which is a combination of the method of D'APPOLONIA et al (1979) for immediate settlement and that of LEROUEIL et al (1978b) for consolidation settlement, was not reliable as it underpredicted settlement at some sections. However, a conservative estimate was obtained by considering secondary settlement since the beginning of construction. Long term settlement was overestimated in the soft sections by the method of SKEMPTON & BJERRUM (1957). The method of ASAOKA (1978) generally underpredicted the ultimate settlement. The elastic method gave the best estimates of both construction and post-construction settlements when back-figured parameters were used as input .
