AbstractThe behaviour of clay foundation under two test embankments namely; Nong Ngoo Hao test embankment and Bang Na-Bang Pakong Highway at Station (2+890) were analyzed by finite element method using critical state-effective stress and linear elastic-effective stress theory as embodied in the CRISP program and using non-linear elastic theory in the ISBILD program. The results showed that coupled consolidation using Biot's three-dimensional consolidation theory with modified cam-clay model incorporated in CRISP program successfully predicted the behaviour of clay foundation under embankment load. The result of linear elastic analysis in CRISP program showed that effective (drained) modulus of 60 times vane shear strength, successfully predicted the movement. Settlement analyses using the Terzaghi's method, Skempton & Bjerrum's method, Leroueil's method, Asaoka ' s curve fitting method and stress path methods were also included from the results of past studies for comparison. The stress path methods and Asaoka's method yielded good prediction while Leroueil's method overpredicted the measured values.
