AbstractThe compressibility of Bangkok c lay near a well instrumented embankment with phasic band drain was studied in a series of in situ and laboratory tests. Eight screw plate tests, 8 pressuremeter tests and 12 Rowe consolidation tests were carried out. The in situ tests wire performed at 4 test levels, namely: 2. 0 m, 4. 0 m. , 6. 0 m and 7. 5 m. Continuous sampling were taken at each level using a 10 inch diameter piston sampler . The test results show that the soil compressibility increases When it reaches at 4 to 5 m depth and deceases beyond this level. ASAOKA method of analysis was used in determining the coefficient of consolidation from screw plate test. The Cv values obtained from the Rowe consolidation test are relatively smaller compared to the screw plate test. The undrained modulus varies directly from 4 m to 7. 5 m depth for both in situ tests. The coefficient of earth pressure at rest obtained from the pressuremeter test at various level ranges from 0. 5 to 0. 7. The estimated settlement using the elastic method showed that the parameters obtained from the screw plate tests underpredicts the final consolidation settlement while the results of the pressuremeter tests overestimated the actual settlement. Asaoka' s method was based on the observed data o f the performance of the test embankment and showed a more accurate prediction of the actual consolidation settlement .
