AbstractThe uniaxial compression test has been widely used for the determination of uniaxial compressive strength and static elastic modulus of rock cores, but requires machined specimens and is therefore a slow techanique. Preparation of rock cores is costl y and time consuming. Rock lumps can be easily prepared even for weak rocks. Choosing ultrasonic pulse test on rock lumps as a convenient and rapid method to estimate the static properties is a fesible alternative. Samples were collected from several locations in Thailand. The ultrasonic pulse test was conducted on the rock lump specimens. The dynamic elastic modulus of lumps was calculated from the P-wave and S-wave velocity measured and was compared with the dynamic elastic modulus of rock cores. Also, the relationship between them was established. Comparing the dynamic elastic modulus and point load strength index of lumps with the results of uniaxia l compression test, the properties in static condition can be estimated.
