AbstractThis report presents the results of an in vestigation of the strength and deformation behavior of the s oft c l ay at Samut Prakarn located o n the south o f Bangkok. The short term stability analysis determines the stability during o r right after the construction , when it is more critical as the excess pore pressure built up in the clay has not dissipated and is in the process of dissipation. The shear strength in this case is the undrained shear strength. To shear strength conventional consolidated undrained triaxial test with pore pressure measurements were carried out on the undisturbed samples taken from depth of 3 m to 1 2 m. The laboratory testing programme was divided into 3 series, unconsolidated undrained test, isotropic consolidated undrained test and anisotropic consolidated undrained test. Results of the investigation revealed that the value of A decreased wit h increase in depth or consolidation pressure , the stress- strain curve attained a peak a t 4 to 5 % strain for CIU test s and 1 t o 2. 5 % strain for anisotropic tests. CIU tests gave larger value of S,, la' v a compared to CAU or UU test . The ratio of the undrained strength to the effective over burden pressure is almost constant for a particular test Tests have shown that the initial part of t he stress strain curve is characterized by a steep rise followed by a sharp bend reached at relatively small strain.
